Lot Description
JANSSON, Joannes (1588-1664) and Jodocus HONDIUS (1563-1612) America noviter delineata. [Amsterdam, ca 1632].Hand-colored engraved map of the Americas, image 410 x 550 mm (444 x 580 mm sheet). Inset maps of the North and South Poles, three decorative borders, galleons and sea monsters. (Short tear repaired on verso along center fold at bottom, edges and fold reinforced on verso, a few short marginal tears, some light browning.) Separately published issue of Jansson's rare map of the Americas based on Hondius' map of 1618. "This very rare map is most easily distinguished by the chipped top right hand corner of the plate that appears in virtually all known examples. The figures bordering the sides have been reversed, and curiously the lower corner town plans have been transposed. The cartouche also bears the addition of two skulls." Jansson's map includes a more correct description of Tierra del Fuego. Burden I 207.
