[London:] George Humble, 1626 [but 1627].Hand-colored engraved map of the Americas, image 394 x516 mm (410 x 537 mm sheet), matted and framed. Decorative cartouche, inset map of Greenland, 8 town views in top border, 10 costumed figures in side borders, galleons and sea monsters, English text on verso. (Split along center fold reinforced on verso, a few tears repaired on verso, corners renewed.) FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE OF THE FIRST MAP PUBLISHED IN AN ATLAS TO DEPCIT CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND, Boston and Long Island not named, with George Humble's imprint. Engraved by Abraham Goos, Speed's map is the first to depict the eastern seaboard, from the Chesapeake Bay to Cape Cod, with accuracy, and names the early English colonies of "James Citti" and Plymouth.
