Lot 2
Chester County, Pennsylvania, 1815-76. 206 pp. Large folio. Case record book, written entirely in MS., belonging to justice of the peace Daniel Abraham, recording hundreds of his summary accounts of judgements, suits, warrants, summonses, fines, and other trial-related occurences over his long career. Numerous accounts of marriage, civil cases, and bastardy are recorded between hundreds of individuals from in and around Chester and Delaware counties, Pennsylvania, and specifically the township of Willistown. Original quarter calf, over marbled paper-covered boards, rubbed and worn; text variously spotted, soiled, and dampstained; various ephemera laid in, including one indenture on vellum from 1749. An illuminating account of the career of a justice of the peace, spanning over 50 years of his service, and offering a fascinating glimpse into small town nineteenth-century Pennsylvania life.
