Lot Description
[Philadelphia] Nineteenth-Century Ledger of Jonah Thompson

Philadelphia, 1811-14. Large folio. 376 pp. Ledger, written entirely in MS., of Philadelphia-based Quaker merchant Jonah Thompson, recording his business dealings and transactions with numerous individuals and firms, and containing many copies of letters to Philadelphia merchants. Original full reverse brown calf, rubbed and slightly worn, stamped in blind and in gilt, red morocco spine label; all edges trimmed; marbled endpapers; twentieth-century ownership signature on recto of first free leaf; scattered light toning and soiling to text. Jonah Thompson (1786-1861) was a Quaker merchant and son of John Thompson and Rebecca Chalkley James. His father is remembered for having worked with abolitionist and educator Anthony Benezet at the latter's Negro School at Philadelphia. In 1821, Jonah and his brother George became the proprietors of the Phoenix Nail Works, located in what is now Phoenixville. By 1824, the company had become one of the largest manufacturers of nails in the United States.
