Lot Description
JANSSON, Joannes (1588-1664) Nova Anglia Novuum Belgium et Virginia. Amsterdam, [1639 or later].Hand-colored engraved map, image 388 x 503 mm (482 x 579 mm sheet) matted and framed. Decorative cartouches, compasses rose, galleons and sea monsters, French text on verso with signature ddddd. (Short split along center fold repaired, a few minor stains.) FIRST STATE of Janssons's map, based on de Laet's map of 1630, which was the first map to name Manhattan ("Manbattes") and New Amsterdam. Covering a larger area, Jansson's map includes part of the great lakes ("Grand Lac" and "Lac des Yroquois") as well as an unnamed Lake Champlain. Burden I 247.
