Double action percussion pepperbox with ribbed 6-barrel cluster, engraved frame and recoil shield, oval triggerguard and no sights. Barrel marked on two of the ribs PATENTED 1837 CAST-STEEL and ALLEN & THURBER WORCESTER. Left side of bar hammer marked ALLEN'S PATENT. Matching serial number 163 in triggerguard, on upper rear of barrel breech, on left of frame under the grip and in both grips. The gun is contained in a period Allen casing with a compartmentalized interior lined in burgundy velvet. The casing includes a two-cavity iron pepperbox mold that casts both a round and an oval bullet, a shell motif pocket pistol sized flask and some loose percussion caps. This gun comes from the Collection of Charles Worman, co-author of the two volume set Firearms of the American West. A solid example of a fairly scarce "transitional" Dragoon pepperbox that retains the grip angle of the Norwich era production guns.
