Philadelphia: Zachariah Poulson, November 2, 1808-October 31, 1810. Elephant folio. Comprising over 280 issues. Contemporary three-quarter tan calf over marbled paper-covered boards, stamped in gilt, red morocco spine label, boards rubbed and worn, front and rear boards detached but present; issues variously foxed, darkened, and dampstained. Founded by John Dunlap in 1771, and called "The Pennsylvania Packet, or the General Advertiser", this newspaper was the first successful daily newspaper in the United States. In 1800, American editor and publisher Zachariah Poulson purchased the paper and changed its name to "Poulson's American Daily Advertiser". Poulson ran the paper for nearly 40 years before selling it to the owners of the "North American" in 1839.
