Lot Description
JOHN BENTHAM DINSDALE (BRITISH 1927-2006) "CAPTURE" (THE PRINCE DE NEUFCHATEL)
Provenance: Sotheby's, London, sale of December 14, 2006, lot 90.
Acquired directly from the above sale.
Private Collection, Virginia.
NOTE:
The Prince de Neufchatel was one of the fastest American schooner-rigged privateers. Built in New York by Adam and Noah Brown around 1812-1814, she met a tragic end in December 1814, when she was outrun by three British frigates and had to surrender. Although American in design, the Neufchatel mainly operated in European waters, damaging British shipping during the War of 1812. At one point in her career she fought off the British frigate Endymion, who was considered one the fastest ships in the Royal Navy.
